Earl B. Winthrop, AIF®
President and Founding Partner, Wealth Advisor
Earl is a founding partner of Winthrop Wealth with nearly five decades of experience with equity and fixed income markets and developing and implementing financial planning solutions (as a CPA beginning in 1976 and then as an LPL Financial Broker in 1985). He began investing in stocks in 1967, using funds he earned from his landscaping and snow removal business. He worked throughout high school and college at a regional supermarket chain store unloading freight trucks and on weekends worked as an assistant for Cashier Operations and continued to invest in stocks and equity derivatives. Earl attended the University of Hartford and was a recipient of the Price Waterhouse scholarship.
After working as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for 8 years at Arthur Andersen & Co. and PWC, Earl joined LPL in 1985 as a licensed broker, and in 1995, as an investment advisor representative. He founded Winthrop Investment Management LLC in 2000 and Winthrop Wealth, a registered investment advisor in 2017. Earl’s vision was to create a unique wealth management practice by providing customized investment management and financial planning solutions to assist clients with their financial lives so that they could be as free as possible from the stress and anxiety of managing all of the complex aspects of their wealth and instead focus on enjoying their lives. To accomplish these goals for clients he believed that it was necessary to gain a thorough understanding of every client’s entire financial situation and their unique goals Only then can effective customized financial advice and investment strategies be provided, monitored and adjusted.
Earl has been instrumental in helping clients navigate though some of the most difficult market cycles in history. His philosophy of seeking to provide exceptional client service is deeply ingrained in the firm’s DNA and has made Winthrop Wealth the destination of choice for many stakeholders and clients. Educating the next generation is a top priority as he leads the Financial Education and Planning Team. For several families, the clients at Winthrop Wealth are the 3rd and 4th generation.
He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Connecticut Society of CPAs and is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF). Earl has served on the University of Hartford Student Investment Committee and participated as a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sisters organization in Hartford, CT.
One of Earl’s greatest passions is ‘Giving back’. Earl and Maria are co-founders of the Maria Martell-Winthrop Innovation in Breast Cancer Fund at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center. Earl has dedicated himself to assisting with the Fund and is extremely passionate about continuing Maria’s work. The Fund’s primary purpose is to provide funds for scalp cooling to women undergoing chemotherapy (for breast cancer). Scalp cooling is a proven way to help women maintain their hair. Maintaining one’s hair is proven to have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. Insurance in Massachusetts does not cover these costs. The Fund pays for the cooling treatments for women wo need financial assistance. Additionally, the team at Winthrop Wealth is actively involved in the Boston Animal Rescue League.
He was very involved in coaching Avon CT youth soccer, alpine ski racing, and enjoys spending time with his family, working out, and living a healthy lifestyle. He shares his passion for leading a healthy lifestyle with his clients and friends. He is an avid skier (level 2 avalanche trained), hiker, boxer and workout enthusiast. Earl was a competitor and member of the International Freestyle Skiers Association (IFSA) and is a supporter of the US Ski and Snowboard Team.
